Hi Jonathan,

Well, you know that we're just not as good at the stiff upper lip thing in the colonies!

One feature that we have going here on Vancouver Island is usually very mild temperatures. When we get snow, things just get paralyzed. We don't have adequate equipment to deal with it and most people are very poor drivers in it.

The mountain to the west of town (where that picture is from) must be crossed by about half our congregation. There were several accidents on it yesterday, leading to road closures. (It is the only route connecting Victoria to the rest of Vancouver Island, other than back country logging roads, even worse in snow!) When a storm hits at the wrong time (i.e., Saturday night), we just go into turtle mode.

I believe in the whole history of our church back to 1877 there is only one record of a Sunday service being cancelled. The 'Preacher's Book' records that in about 1920 the heating had failed and it was 'too cold for sermon - read Matthew 5 and dismissed congregation'

In England the general attitude is carry on regardless, even if you only have two or three people who made it to church!
